Summer Learning Day on July 9 is almost upon us, and it’s a great opportunity to showcase your program and get the word out about the importance of summer learning.
Host an event during the week of July 6, to help focus attention on how summer programs:
* Send young people back to school ready to learn
* Support working families
* Help to keep children safe and healthyThe National Center for Summer Learning offers free, online resources, including an event checklist, event media advisory template and summer learning talking points that you can use to kick start your event. You can find these resources and other event planning ideas here.
Past events have helped to spread the word about the importance of keeping kids learning over the summer and generated support from dignitaries such as President (then Senator) Obama, shown here at the Center’s 2006 Summer Learning Day event in Washington, DC.
In 2008, Summer Learning Day included over 250 registered events in 35 states and a major policy event in Washington, DC, where summer learning leaders from around the country made the case for increased federal investment in summer learning programs. The DC event also presented our first ever “Champions of Summer Learning” award to four policymakers who have made summer learning a policy priority.
Summer Learning Day is made possible by the generous support of the Verizon Foundation, the Staples Foundation for Learning, and the Atlantic Philanthropies.
